Unlock the TFL: The Secret Key to Happy Hips
Prepare for an "Ah-Ha" Moment with Your Hip Tension
The Tensor Fasciae Latae (TFL) might be a mouthful to say, but understanding this lesser-known muscle could be the key to unlocking your hip tension. The TFL is a thick, tense, rope-like muscle at the top of your IT band. When you finally access this spot, it feels like you've found the magic button to release all the tension in your hips.
For those of us who spend a lot of time sitting, the TFL can become incredibly tight. When you sit, this muscle is in a shortened state, and prolonged periods of sitting can make it habitually tight. Additionally, most of us tend to externally rotate our femur bones when we sit, putting our hips into external rotation. The TFL stretches when your thigh bone internally rotates, which rarely happens while sitting. So, if you’re a habitual sitter, chances are your TFLs are habitually tight.
But what does a tight TFL feel like?
It can manifest as various pain symptoms, including back and sacral tightness and general hip stiffness. Those with the tightest TFLs often struggle with internally rotating their femur bones, which can lead to tension and problems elsewhere in the body.
