What we learned from using the foam roller for 7 days straight.

There are many popular practices that lack evidential support to be able to know how we can benefit (or not) from them. Four times a year, I run a free, 7-Day Foam Rolling Challenge that has participants rolling different areas for 7 days straight, and my inner-scientist can’t get enough of the consistent feedback and results people experience.
Foam rolling often gets labeled as just a fitness add-on, but what if it’s more than that? Our recent seven-day foam rolling challenge showed us just how powerful and life-changing it can be. With hundreds of people joining in, the feedback was pretty amazing. Let's dive into some of the unexpected results we discovered!
The Power of Community
First up, having a community makes a huge difference. Participants found it way easier to stay motivated and consistent by sharing their experiences and supporting each other. Our group chat was buzzing with discussions, questions, and encouragement, turning foam rolling from a solo activity into a fun group event. It was awesome to have a safe space and to see everyone lift each other up and keep the energy going.
Connecting the Dots and Understanding Your Own Pain
A lot of folks had those “aha” moments where they finally connected the dots between their pain points and the foam rolling techniques we covered. For example, rolling out the inner thighs helped many people ease their lower back pain. This newfound understanding of how different parts of the body are connected helped everyone tackle the root causes of their discomfort more effectively.
Holistic Body Relief
Expanding on that last note, our mini-classes took a holistic approach that worked wonders for various issues like lower back pain and plantar fasciitis. People quickly realized that working on one area of the body often brought relief to another, showing just how interconnected our bodies are. Rolling out tension in one spot had benefits all over the place, making foam rolling a fantastic all-in-one solution for overall well-being.
Better Sleep? Yes, Please!
The most surprising result? Improved sleep quality! By the third or fourth day, lots of participants noticed they were sleeping better. This is because foam rolling has a calming effect on the parasympathetic nervous system. Using a soft foam roller increases proprioception. It helps you connect deeply with your tissues to relax your nervous system, making it easier to get a good night's sleep. Who knew a simple foam roller could have such a big impact?
