Breathe Bigger and Better with the Diaphragm Roll
This newest technique is like nothing you have ever experienced (unless you’ve taken my classes, in which case…)
I can’t get enough of the intercostal and diaphragm roll, tbh. I love it for so many reasons. It:
Exercises the diaphragm therapeutically, expanding its capacity for oxygen and taking the work of breathing away from your neck and chest
Realigns your posture by creating more space between the ribs, so you may stand straighter, taller and with more ease.
Alleviates digestive woes by increasing functionality of your visceral organs, because movement of the diaphragm provides an internal massage.
Because of ALL of the above, it takes tension out of your neck and shoulders naturally.
Convinced…Gimme! (It’s FREE.)
Why do we do this roll?
When we're inclined to slouch while sitting day after day, the shoulders slump forward so does the ribcage, shortening the space between each anterior rib. This posture not only tightens the intercostal muscles to a place where it's difficult to leave the posture altogether, but it also inhibits the amount of space our diaphragm has to fully expand upon inhaling, making it a challenge to breathe deeply. Since the diaphragm is a primary respiratory muscle, if it’s not able to expand to its fullest capacity, your scalene muscles in the front of your neck, which are secondary respiratory muscles, will take over the job of breathing deeply.

Try it! See how your diaphragm tests:
Sit up relatively straight and exhale all the air out of your lungs
Take a deep breath in, filling your belly first
Notice at which point your belly fills and your chest expands, and at which point after that your shoulders begin to raise and the front of the neck engages
If it was any earlier than about 4 seconds, you’ve got a diaphragm to expand!
